Torquay United manager Gary Johnson has won the Vanarama National League manager of the month award for April 2021.
The former Yeovil Town, Bristol City and Cheltenham boss oversaw a superb run of the form, which saw the Gulls win six of their seven matches in April. Their stunning 2-2 draw with Notts County, where goals from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Ben Wynter - the latter of which came in 'Gary-time' - earned them a point, was the only game United failed to win.
"If people don’t mind, I’d like to call this award: ‘the club of the month’," said Johnson - after receiving the prize for the second time this season. "And I look forward to seeing our supporters very soon at Plainmoor on the 22nd.”
Johnson previously won the award in October 2020 - also after overseeing a run six of wins from seven league games - and he went on to pay tribute to the players, staff and the club's board of directors.
“I appreciate winning this prestigious award. However, it’s also important to acknowledge the effort and work done by our staff, our players and our board of directors in seeing us through this very difficult time of a covid season," added Johnson.
“We will do our best to see the season out – it should be very exciting and we will do everything in our power to give the club and its fans promotion over the next few weeks."
This news comes following the announcement that fans will be allowed back inside Plainmoor from May 17, which means the Gulls' final home game on May 22 against Barnet will be taking place in front of a limited number of spectators.
