FIVE TALKING POINTS FROM TORQUAY UNITED VERSUS MAIDENHEAD UNITED

1. Record breakers.

As well as being United's fourth consecutive win in the National League, they also made it ten wins from their opening 12 league fixtures, which translates to a points haul of 31. In terms of points won this is the Gulls' greatest ever start to a campaign in terms of points won in recent memory - as they moved five points clear of second placed Sutton United with a game in hand.

In their opening 12 league fixtures of the 1987-88 season under the late Cyril Knowles United accumulated 23 points. Three years later in the 1990-91 campaign under Knowles' successor Dave Smith they earned 28 points. In the first two seasons of Leroy Rosenior's reign - 2002-03 and 2003-04 - Torquay picked up 24 and 21 points from their opening 12 league fixtures. Fast forward to the 2007-08 season under Paul Buckle the Gulls picked up 29 points from a possible 36 in the opening dozen fixtures, which Gary Johnson's class of 2020-21 have eclipsed by two points.

2. Captain Marvel.

Gulls' skipper Asa Hall was awarded the sponsor's man of the match award and deservedly so. As well as providing the assist for Ben Whitfield's opening goal on the stroke of half-time, with a volleyed pass, Hall also made a number of important blocks and interceptions. He also looked composed in possession as he made his experience count.

3. Whitfield's fifth of the campaign.

Just as it looked as though the Gulls would be heading into the half-time interval with nothing to show for their efforts, Ben Whitfield connected with Asa Hall's pass and coolly struck with his fifth goal of the campaign. Last season, the former Bournemouth and Port Vale man was United's second top scorer with seven goals behind Jamie Reid who found the back of the net 21 times in all competitions. At the time of writing, Whitfield is joint second in the Gulls' goalscoring charts with Hall on five, and is looking well-placed to hit double figures before the end of the campaign.

4. The Wright stuff.

Veteran targetman Danny Wright has received a new lease of life since linking up with Gary Johnson again at Plainmoor. While at Cheltenham under Johnson, Wright found the back of the net 22 times in the National League in the 2015-16 season as the Robins clinched the title, and he appears on course to do the same with the Gulls in the 2020-21 campaign. Wright has surpassed the five goals that he scored for Solihull Moors in the 2019-20 season, and after scoring his seventh of the current campaign against Maidenhead he's now three short of double figures.

5. Randell impresses again.

Plymouth Argyle loanee Adam Randell has been hailed as a future Pilgrims' captain by Argyle manager Ryan Lowe, and he once again displayed signs of the maturity that earned him those plaudits. Randell, 20, showed great composure on the ball and it was his cross that provided the assist of Danny Wright's second goal. His current loan agreement with the Pilgrims is due to end in January 2021, and it would surely suit all parties if he was to remain at Plainmoor for the remainder of the 2020-21 campaign.
